+ "Maple Tree and Eagle" Mug by Gao Jian-fu Gao Jian-fu (1879-1951), the founder of the Lingnan School, is known along with Gao Qi-feng and Chen Shu-ren as the "Three Masters of Lingnan”. He learned under Ju Lian and later went to Japan for further studies. He spent his life practicing and teaching how to "balance Chinese and foreign, blending ancient and modern" for a "new Chinese painting. This painting shows an eagle perched in a tree with its back to the viewer and wings slightly spread as if either having just landed or about to take flight. Its feathers were outlined in dark ink and then washed with light ink. The tree was rendered with texturing in light ink, the brushstrokes twisting and turning with the form, in addition to revealing variations of light and dark. The ink is light yet dry, giving the tree trunk a quality similar to rocks. Also twisting around the trunk is a vine with large red leaves, the edges and veins outlined in heavy ink, to which the "impacting water" wash method was applied. the entire work combining both spirit and form.
